Harry Potter 1 Chapter 1 해리포터 원서 수준이 얼만큼이지?

 

Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. 

프리빗가 4번지에 사는 더즐리 부부는 자신들이 완벽하게 평범하다는것을 대단히 매우매우~자랑스럽게 말하고 다녔지.

 

They were the last people you'd expect to be in- volved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense. 

그들 부부는 이상하거나 신비한 일에는 절대로 관여하지 않을것 같은 최후의 사람들이야. 왜냐면 그들은 그런 넌센스에 절대로 빠지지 않을 사람들이거든.

 

Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills.

더즐리씨는 드릴 만드는 그러닝이란 회사의 디렉터(이사)였어. 

He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, al- though he did have a very large mustache.

그는 거대하고 육중해서 목이 없어질정도였지만 매우 큰 콧수염을 가지긴 했지.

 

Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which useful as she much of her time craning over  garden fences, spying on the neighbors. 

더즐리 부인은 날씬한 금발에 두배나 긴 목을 가졌어. 그건 이웃을 염탐하기 위해 울타리 너머로 목을 길게 뺄때 아주 유용하지.

 

The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy any- where.

더즐리 부부는 더들리라는 작은 아들이 있었는데,

그들 소견으로는 그 어디에도 더들리보다 나은 아이는 없다고 생각했지.

 

The Dursleys had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that somebody would discover it. 

그들은 원하는 모든것을 가졌지만 한가지 비밀이 있었고 그 비밀이 드러날까봐 가장 두려워했어.

 

They didn't think they could bear it if anyone found out about the Potters.

그들은 누군가 포터가족에 대해 알아낸다면 견딜수 없을거라 생각했어.

 

Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Dursley's sister, but they hadn't met for several years;

포토부인은 더즐리 부인의 여동생이였지만 그들은 몇년동안 만나적이 없어.

in fact, Mrs. Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister,

사실 더즐리 부인은 여동생이 없는척 했지.

because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be.

왜냐하면 여동생과 그녀의 쓸모없는 남편은 더즐리가족과는 전혀 달랐거든.

 

The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbors would say if the Potters arrived in the street. The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son, too, but they had never even seen him. 

 

This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didn't want Dudley mixing with a child like that.

 

 When Mr. and Mrs. Dursley woke up on the dull, gray Tuesday our story starts,

더즐리 부부가 칙칙하고 재빛 화요일에 일어났을 때, 이 스토리가 시작돼.

there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange and mysterious things would soon be happen- ing all over the country. 

그날 흐린 하늘 어디에도 곧 전지역에 걸처 이상하고 신비로운 이이 일어날 기미는 보이지 않았었지.

Mr. Dursley hummed as he picked out his most boring tie for work,

and Mrs. Dursley gossiped away happily as she wrestled a screaming Dudley into his high chair. 

더즐리씨는 세상 가장 지루해보이는 넥타이를 고르며 콧노래를 흥얼거렸고

더즐리부인은 비명을 지르는 더들리를 유아식탁에 앉히려고 애쓰면서 행복하게 잡담을 늘어놓았어.

 

None of them noticed a large, tawny owl flutter past the window. 

그들 중 누구도 황갈색의 큰 올빼비가 창문을 지나 날아가는 것을 보지 못했단 말이지.

At half past eight, Mr. Dursley picked up his briefcase, pecked Mrs. Dursley on the cheek,

8시 반이 지나 더즐리씨는 서류가방을 집어들고 부인에게 입맞추고

and tried to kiss Dudley good-bye but missed,

because Dudley was now having a tantrum and throwing his cereal at the walls.

아들에게도 키스 하려했지만 더들리가 짜증내며 시리얼을 벽에 던지고 있었기 때문에 하지 못했어.

 

"Little tyke, " chortled Mr. Dursley as he left the house.

He got into his car and backed out of number four's  drive.

그는 차를 타고 4번 도로를 빠져나왔어.

 

​It was on the corner of the street that he noticed the first sign of something peculiar - a cat reading a map.
그가 기이한 일의 첫번째 징후를 알아차린것은 길모퉁이였어! - 고양이가 지도를 읽고 있었거든!

For a second,  Mr Dursley didn't realize what he had seen - then he jerked his head around to look again.

잠시동안, 더즐리씨는 그가 본것을 깨닫지 못하고 다시 보기위해 고개를 홱 돌렸어. 

There was a tabby cat standing on the corner of Privet Drive, but there wasn't a map in sight. 

​길 모퉁이에 얼룩무늬 고양이가 있긴했지만 지도는 보이지 않았어.

 

peck[pek] ​ 입을 맞추다 tantrum[ˈtæntrəm] 짜증을 냄​ tyke[taɪk]  (특히 말썽쟁이) 아이 chortle[ˈtʃɔːrtl]  재미있어서 깔깔거리다​ back out 빠져나오다​ peculiar [pɪˈkjuːliə(r)]  ​ 기이한​ jerk [dʒɜːrk] 홱 움직이다

 

What could he have been thinking of?  It must have been a trick of the light.
그가 무슨 생각을 할 수 있었겠니? 그건 분명 빛에 의한 착각일거라고 생각했겠지. 

 Mr. Dursley blinked and stared at the cat.

더즐리씨는 눈을 껌뻑이며 고양이를 응시했어.
 It stared back.  As Mr. Durs- ley drove around the corner and up the road, he watched the cat in his mirror.

그것은 뒤를 보고 있었어. 
 It was now reading the sign that said Privet Drive- no, looking at the sign; cats couldn't read maps or signs.

 Mr. Dursley gave himself a little shake and put the cat out of his mind. 
As he drove toward town he thought of nothing except a large order of drills he was hoping to get that day. 

​ But on the edge of town, drills were driven out of his mind by something else.

As he sat in the usual morning traffic jam, he couldn't help noticing that there seemed to be a lot of strangely dressed people about. People in cloaks.

Mr. Dursley couldn't bear people who dressed in funny clothes -  the getups you saw on young people! 

He supposed this was some stupid new fashion. 

He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel

and his  eyes fell on a huddle of these weirdos standing quite close by. 

They were whis-pering excitedly together. 

Mr. Dursley was enraged to see that a couple of them weren't young at all; why, that man had to be older than he was, and wearing an emerald-reen cloak!

The nerve of him!

But then it struck Mr. Dursley that this was probably some silly stunt - these people were obviously collecting for some- thing. . . yes, that would be it.

 

The traffic moved on and a few minutes later, Mr. Dursley arrived in the Grunnings parking lot, his mind back on drills.
